Optometry & Eye Examination OSCE Preparation

Use these suggested practice stations to rehearse observation and explanation. They are a preparation pathway, not an official examination, a certification or a substitute for your school’s marking criteria.

Station 1: pupil examination

  • Establish the normal direct and consensual light responses.
  • Switch to RAPD, perform the swinging flashlight comparison and describe both pupils.
  • Explain how an afferent defect differs from anisocoria. Read the pupil guide before repeating the station.

Station 2: alignment and motility

  • Observe the corneal light reflexes before moving to cover testing.
  • Describe which eye moves and in which direction during cover–uncover and alternate cover testing.
  • Compare a tropia with a phoria. Add gaze examination and explain how findings vary with gaze position.

Station 3: retinoscopy and lensometry

  • Keep working distance consistent, describe reflex motion and neutralize both principal meridians.
  • State how working distance affects the final retinoscopy result.
  • In the lensometer, focus the target, record both readings and explain the cylinder and axis.

A repeatable self-review

  • For each station, state the task, describe the observation and explain the mechanism.
  • Write one error you made and what you will change on the next attempt.
  • Use your course requirements for timing and marking. These activities do not create a validated OSCE score or certify clinical competence.
